Overview
Lee College has been a partner of Be Well™ Baytown since 2017. Be Well Baytown is an initiative of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, sponsored by ExxonMobil, with an overall goal of mobilizing the Baytown community to promote wellness and reduce the risk for cancer. As a part of this initiative, Lee College is educating faculty members, staff, and students on the harmful effects of excessive sun exposure, providing the necessary tools to help reduce their risk by increasing availability of shade across campus and installing free sunscreen dispensers.
Sun Safety Efforts
In the summer of 2018, sun safety efforts were adopted at four campus locations (Main campus, McNair Center, Lee College Education Center – South Liberty County, and Huntsville Center).
Efforts implemented to date include:
- Establishing a dedicated Sun Safety Project Committee comprised of faculty, staff, and students to manage and grow current efforts.
- Developing campus-wide guidelines regarding sun safety with endorsements by key stakeholders.
- Distributing sun safety information to the college community through outdoor signage and digital displays around campus, social media channels, newsletters, the Lee College website, local media outlets, and giveaway items that encourage sun protective behaviors.
- Delivering sun safety messaging during campus activities and events such as orientation sessions for students, professional development for faculty and staff, Fall Fiesta, Spring Fling, Health Fairs, and athletic events.
- Incorporating sun safety topics into the curriculum for nursing, education, health, and outdoor career technical programs.
- Providing access to free sunscreen dispensers conveniently located throughout campus (Map). (Campus sunscreen dispensers will be reinstated at a time deemed appropriate by the Lee College safety committee.)
- Installing sun shades on Main campus grounds to increase shaded areas for students, faculty and staff.
