The social work profession aims to enhance human well-being and help meet basic and complex needs of all people, with a particular focus on those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.
A defining feature of social work is the profession's focus on individual well-being in a social context and the well-being of society.
Social workers are found in every facet of community life, including schools, hospitals, mental health clinics, senior centers, elected office, private practices, prisons, military, corporations, and in numerous public and private agencies.
Students should work with their advisor to tailor course selections to align with their chosen transfer university. The transfer plan on this page shows a tailored example for a university commonly chosen by Lee College students. However, students may choose to continue their education at any university.
Students will learn the history and development of social work as a profession, including social work values, ethics, and areas of practice under a generalist intervention model. Students will gain knowledge in the importance of cultural competence, the role of social work in advocacy on behalf of vulnerable populations, the role of legislation and public policy in program and service development, and have observational field experiences. After completing the social work field of study or the associates degree, students are able to transfer to a four-year university. Universities are required to accept all courses in the social work field of study.
