Biology is the scientific study of life, from the smallest cells and microorganisms to complex organisms and ecosystems. Through Lee College's Biology Pathway, students explore the fundamental processes of life, including genetics, evolution, cellular biology, anatomy and physiology, and the interactions between living organisms and their environments. Whether you aspire to become a scientist, healthcare professional, researcher, or simply want to better understand the living world around you, biology provides the foundation for exploring the science of life.
Lee College offers an associate of science (AS) degree with a concentration in biology designed for students planning to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a bachelor's degree in biology or a related field. Through classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory experiences, and scientific investigations, students develop biological knowledge, critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and laboratory skills essential for success in scientific and healthcare professions.
The biology pathway also provides foundational coursework for students pursuing professional programs in nursing, physician assistant studies, clinical laboratory science, dental hygiene, pharmacy, and other health-related fields. In addition, students may pursue entry-level technical or laboratory assistant positions in selected biological science fields upon completion of their associate degree.
For students seeking a science elective or exploring an interest in biology, Lee College offers courses that introduce the fascinating diversity of life, human biology, environmental science, and the relationship between science and everyday life.
Many careers require education beyond the associate degree. Students should work with their advisor to tailor course selections to align with their chosen transfer university or professional program. The transfer plan(s) on this page provide examples of courses commonly accepted by universities selected by Lee College students. However, students may choose to continue their education at any university.
Students in Lee College's Biology Pathway will develop a strong foundation in the scientific study of life, from microscopic cells and microorganisms to the human body, diverse organisms, and complex ecosystems. Through classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory experiences, and scientific investigations, students will explore fundamental biological principles, including cell structure and function, genetics, evolution, biodiversity, anatomy and physiology, and the interactions between living organisms and their environments.
Students will gain practical laboratory skills through the use of microscopes, scientific instruments, biological specimens, and experimental techniques. They will learn to apply the scientific method by developing hypotheses, conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing evidence-based conclusions.
The program emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, quantitative reasoning, scientific communication, and teamwork. Students will also develop an understanding of laboratory safety, scientific ethics, and the role of biological sciences in addressing challenges related to human health, biotechnology, environmental sustainability, and scientific discovery.
This knowledge and these skills provide a foundation for students transferring to four-year universities to pursue degrees in biology or related scientific disciplines, entering healthcare and other professional programs, or seeking selected entry-level positions in biological and laboratory sciences
